Blue Buffalo has introduced Wilderness Bone Broth Boosted, a high-protein dry cat food that owners can serve as crunchy kibble or turn into a brothy meal by adding water, according to Pet Food Processing. The line will be sold at Petco and PetSmart through spring 2027 before reaching other retailers nationwide.

The food is coated with chicken bone broth. When water is added, the coating becomes soup-like and adds moisture to the meal, while the kibble pieces stay crunchy for up to one hour, the company said.

What is in Wilderness Bone Broth Boosted

The broth is made from slow-simmered chicken bones and tissues that are naturally high in collagen, a structural protein found in connective tissue. Blue Buffalo says the collagen from the broth and the food’s protein content help support mobility and maintain muscle in cats.

The recipes are grain-free and made without corn, wheat or soy. They also contain LifeSource Bits, the brand’s antioxidant-rich kibble pieces that appear in other Blue Buffalo foods.

Three recipes are available at launch:

  • Adult Indoor Cat with Chicken
  • Adult Cat with Chicken
  • Adult Cat with Salmon

How the 2-in-1 format works

The line builds on Blue Buffalo’s existing dry-to-wet kibble, which the company describes as a patented 2-in-1 format. Owners can serve the same bag dry one day and wet the next without switching foods. Ashley Soukup, business unit director for Cat Feeding and Dog Treating at General Mills, which owns Blue Buffalo, said the earlier dry-to-wet products “have seen strong results.”

Soukup said cats can be excited by a food one day and lose interest the next, and that the new line adds more protein and collagen through the broth. She called it “a completely new way” for cats to experience the Wilderness brand.

What it means for cat owners

For owners of picky eaters, the product gives two textures from one bag, which may reduce the need to buy separate wet and dry foods. Adding water also raises the moisture in the meal. Owners whose cats have health conditions should ask their veterinarian whether a high-protein, grain-free food suits their pet before changing diets.

Claims about mobility and muscle support come from Blue Buffalo. The company did not release study results on the new recipes.

Where to buy it
